Maevsky, Dimitry

Dmitry Ivanovich Maevsky
was born May 17, 1917 in Petrograd (Saint Petersburg; Leningrad), Russia.

From 1937-1939 Mr. Maevsky studied at the Repin Institute of Arts.   He enrolled in the art workshop and studio headed by the famous Isaak Brodsky.   Under Brodsky’s tutelage, he learned painting in the very best naturalistic tradition of Russian Landscape, inspired particularly by Isaac Levitan and other Masters of the late nineteenth century Russian School.

Mr. Brodsky’s other notable pupils included Nikolai Timkov, Alexander Laktionov, Yuri Neprintsev, Piotr Belousov, Piotr Vasiliev, Mikhail Kozell and others.

Mr. Maevsky’s extensive art education also included studying in the art workshops and studios of Piotr Buchkin, regarded as one of the founders and brightest representatives of the Leningrad school of painting, and famous Post-war Impressionist Alexander Kharshak.

In 1939 Mr. Maevsky began participating in public art exhibitions.  In 1955 he joined the LCRAU (Leningrad Chapter of the Russian Federation Artists Union).

Dmitry Maevsky mastered landscape, portrait, and subject painting.  He was most famous for his lyrical landscapes of the surrounding neighborhoods of the Academisheskaya Dacha, the oldest and well-known artist colony of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation, on the banks of the Msta River and Mstino Lake.  Many of Russia’s most renowned and successful artists studied there, and Mr. Maevsky ranked high among them.

Paintings by Dmitry Maevsky are in Art museums and private collections in Russia and throughout the world.  His mature, sophisticated approach is a unique synthesis of the best in traditional Russian Landscape and twentieth century Post-Modern technique.

Together with his contemporaries, Nicolai Timkov and Vladimir Krantz, Maevsky’s landscapes represent some of the greatest formal achievements of art in the Soviet Period.

Dmitry Ivanovich Maevsky died in Saint Petersburg in 1992, but his paintings live on, bringing us his fresh approach to nature, and a strong human spirit.  Vail Fine Art family of Galleries is honored to represent the paintings of this very collectible Impressionist Master.
